First heard the word asafoetida (ah-sa-FEH-ti-da) from my
seven-grade English teacher, who used it as a favorite "gotcha"
word on spelling quizzes. With its funny oe spelling, a holdover
from Latin, it stumped me and my classmates. My teacher
explained that asafoetida was an unusual spice, but left it
that. It was only as many years later, when I was living in
Egypt, that I came to know the spice itself- and I discovered
that its spelling is hardly the most unusual thing about it.
